Folly welcomes international submissions all year round.
We are drawn to dark humour, satirical takes on the social scene, and starkly honest accounts of ordinary life. Diversity is celebrated, adversity is welcomed, and, above all, personal expression is championed. We are particularly seeking content that takes risks, screams with honesty and celebrates life’s extraordinary moments. Inspired? Submit your work today.
Submission guidelines :
We accept flash fiction, short stories and poetry. Individual entries mustn’t exceed 2000 words. Don’t take this as a target, we love short and snappy prose of around 500 words too.
Submitted work must be in English, and if previously published please advise of details of publication platform and date. We aren’t unreasonable. We are curating content that fits with our vision while providing a platform for writers whose work suits the tone of our publication.
For consideration and inclusion in our 2023 print publication, submissions must be received prior to 1 July 2023. All other submissions will be considered for the 2024 publication.
We will endeavor to respond to all submissions within four weeks.
Any queries can be directed to: editor@follyjournal.com
Selection panel :
Submitted short stories will be read by our team of Folly readers alongside the editorial team.
Poetry will be selected by wonderful New Zealand poet and writer Hera Lindsay Bird. Hera’s debut, self-titled book "Hera Lindsay Bird' was published by Te Herenga Waka University Press and Penguin UK.
A note on pseudonyms:
We appreciate that frankness and honesty in writing requires courage. For this reason we happily accept stories and poems from writers who wish to use a pseudonym. We will endeavor to ensure your anonymity is maintained during any marketing coverage resulting from your writing and publication within our journal. However, please note that in the event that a submission entered under a pseudonym is a finalist in our Short Story Prize, the prize money will be allocated to a charity of the finalists’ choice.
